If you landed here, Grok probably just stalled, froze on a blank reply, or refused to load at all. That is frustrating, especially in the middle of something. The good news is that most problems with Grok are quick to diagnose, and many of them are not even on Grok’s side. A few simple checks will usually tell you whether the service itself is having trouble or whether something local is getting in the way.

Common reasons Grok stops working
Grok is reachable in several places, and xAI’s status page lists them separately because they can fail on their own. Identifying which surface you are using explains most problems.
- Grok Web, Grok in X and the mobile apps. Grok on grok.com, Grok inside X, and the iOS and Android apps are distinct surfaces. One can have trouble while another works, so it is worth trying Grok on the web if it fails inside X.
- Grok in X depends on X. When you use Grok inside X, a problem with the X app or site can stop Grok even though Grok Web is fine.
- The xAI API is separate. The developer API is its own surface. Elevated API errors affect apps built on xAI, not the consumer Grok app, and vice versa.
- Account and connection issues. Sign-in state, a subscription check, or a network or VPN problem on your side can look like an outage when the service is actually reachable.
How to fix Grok when it is not working
Work through these steps in order. Most people are back up and running before they reach the end of the list.
- Do a hard refresh. Reload the page fully so your browser fetches a fresh copy. On most desktop browsers this is Ctrl and F5, or Cmd, Shift and R on a Mac. This clears a surprising number of glitches.
- Open a private window. Try Grok in an incognito or private window. This loads the site without your extensions or cached data, which quickly tells you whether the problem is local.
- Sign out and back in. A fresh login renews your session and fixes many account related errors, including stuck or blank responses.
- Clear your cache and cookies. If a private window worked, clear the cache and cookies in your normal browser so the fix sticks. Then reload Grok and sign in again.
- Switch networks. Move from Wi-Fi to mobile data, or the other way around. If Grok works on one network but not the other, the issue is with the connection, not the service.
- Disable extensions and your VPN. Turn off ad blockers, privacy extensions, and any VPN or proxy, then reload. If that helps, re-enable them one at a time to find the culprit.
- Update or restart the app. On mobile, make sure you have the latest version, then close the app completely and reopen it. A device restart can also clear lingering issues.
- Wait out rate limits. If you have been sending a lot of requests, pause for a few minutes. Limits reset on their own, and the service usually returns to normal speed shortly after.
Is Grok down, or is it just you?
Telling the difference is easier than it sounds. Start with the live verdict and the recent reports shown at the top of this page. If our checks show a problem and other people are reporting issues at the same time, the outage is on Grok’s side and waiting is the right move.
If this page says Grok looks reachable but it still fails for you, the cause is probably local. Confirm this with two quick tests: open Grok in a private window, and try it on a different network such as mobile data. If either of those works, the problem is something on your device, browser, or connection, and the fix steps above will usually sort it out. How we check Grok
Grok publishes an official xAI status page covering Grok Web, iOS, Android, Grok in X, and xAI API services. This page combines those official component updates, read from the status feed xAI publishes, with our independent reachability checks and user reports, and each surface is shown separately below. We regularly request Grok and watch for a response. Any reply, even a sign-in screen or a security verification page, means the service is reachable. We are honest about the limits of this approach: a reachable result does not guarantee that every feature is working perfectly for every user, only that the service is responding. You can read more about how this works on our methodology page.
Alternatives to Grok during an outage
If Grok is genuinely down and you need to keep working, it is worth having a backup assistant ready. Each of these is a capable, widely used option you can switch to in a pinch, and we track the status of each one too:
- ChatGPT for general questions, writing, and everyday tasks.
- Claude for longer documents, careful reasoning, and detailed explanations.
- Gemini for research, quick lookups, and a tight fit with other tools you may already use.
Keeping one of these open in another tab means a Grok outage costs you minutes rather than your whole afternoon. Once Grok is back, this page will reflect it, and you can pick up right where you left off.
Why Grok Goes Down With X
Grok is reachable in two main places: the dedicated site at grok.com and the assistant built into the X app, formerly Twitter. Both sign you in with an X account, which means Grok’s availability is closely tied to X itself. When X is having authentication or platform problems, Grok often inherits them, and you may see a generic “something went wrong” message, a blank response area, or the assistant simply failing to open inside the app. Access also depends on your subscription tier, so some features are gated behind a paid X plan.
Because sign-in flows through X, a lot of apparent Grok outages are really login or session issues. If you cannot post or log in on X at all, Grok is unlikely to work either. The verdict above focuses on Grok specifically, but it is worth checking whether the broader X platform is healthy when Grok misbehaves.
